D2L, a global learning technology company, recently announced the acquisition of H5P Group, the leading EdTech interactive content creation software provider. The company has also announced the launch of Lumi, a new AI learning product, reinforcing D2L’s commitment to learner-focused innovation for its customers, expanding its flagship learning platform, Brightspace, focusing on tech that improves student learning outcomes.

In an agreement valued at up to $33 million, H5P Group will be acquired to support educators in producing innovative, evolving, and engaging student curriculum that will improve outcomes.

H5P Group, founded in 2014, provides interactive content creation software to a global user base of millions of people in 50+ countries. It also supports H5P, the open-source platform for creating HTML5 content that helps educators develop interactive content to improve learning outcomes. It includes 60+ interactive content plug-ins and an AI-powered Smart Import Tool for course creation.

Speaking on the acquisition, Founder & CEO of D2L, John Baker, said:

We are thrilled that H5P is now a part of D2L. At D2L, creating engaging and powerful learning content should be easy to help users achieve better learning outcomes, and H5P’s suite of user-friendly learning content types is world-class. Our mission has always been to bring everyone outstanding, highly personalized learning experiences, which is another big step toward that goal. We look forward to supporting millions of users and partners to foster better learning outcomes and help people worldwide achieve more than they ever dreamed possible.

By supporting the people at the centre of the learning experience, D2L Lumi is engineered to help deliver outstanding learner outcomes and enhance efficiency for educators and course authors. The newly launched platform is built from the ground up with privacy and data governance in mind. It can provide users with more ways to build high-quality, engaging, human-centred learning experiences with ease:

  • Lumi Quiz – Seamlessly helps educators generate Brightspace quiz questions based on their course content.
  • Lumi Idea – Generates intuitive suggestions for new Brightspace assignments and discussions aligned with course material.
  • Lumi Practice – It makes creating practice questions in Creator+ easier based on course content, saving time and helping improve learning outcomes.
  • Lumi Chat – Creates automated answers to FAQs, surfaces resources and how-to guides for users, and helps reduce IT ticket volume and shorten wait times.

Stephen Laster, President of D2L, added:

At D2L, we’re dedicated to transforming learning in partnership with educators and learners and are committed to harnessing the power of AI to increase access to world-class educational experiences. D2L Lumi is the result of this commitment. We thank our team, educational partners, and researchers for their ongoing collaboration to help ensure we make a positive impact. The best part of today’s announcement is that we’re just getting started. In the coming months, D2L Lumi will be included throughout our core products to enhance everyday workflows, helping save time and supporting the best learning experiences possible.

D2L Lumi was announced at D2L’s 2024 Fusion Conference, an annual gathering of over 1,000 education technology thought leaders and clients worldwide.

H5P Group CEO and Founder Svein-Tore Griff With stated:

It was of great importance to find someone who would embrace the future direction of H5P and help accelerate our progress towards the vision of H5P. D2L has been adamant about keeping the things that make H5P great and using their resources and experience to boost and improve areas like facilitating more community contributions. I am incredibly excited to be working with D2L to speed up our progress towards the vision of H5P. Together, we will accelerate our work to help creatives worldwide create better interactive content faster.

Adding further about the newly introduced platform, John Baker said:

We’re committed to delivering artificial intelligence tools designed to enhance the human learning experience. I’m thrilled to introduce learners and educators to D2L Lumi. We’re actively shaping the future of learning for the better. D2L Lumi is helping to make course creation, delivery, teaching, and learning more accessible and engaging. We couldn’t be more excited about the future of learning.

D2L Lumi will soon be fully revealed, but in the meantime, early users are utilizing its capabilities to produce quizzes and course materials more quickly and with better quality.
