The Tamil Nadu government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google to set up the Tamil Nadu AI Labs in Chennai. The investment delegation signed the MoU with the US in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. This agreement entails the establishment of an AI lab/training hub in Chennai in collaboration with the investment promotion agency Guidancine Tamil Nadu. It aims to help two million youth in the state learn Artificial Intelligence (AI) through its flagship skilling initiative, Naan Mudhalvan.

Artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved over the past few years, with nations worldwide striving to harness its potential. India is at the forefront of this movement, and Tamil Nadu’s collaboration with Google marks a pivotal moment in the state’s journey towards AI-driven development. Chief Minister MK Stalin and TN Industries Minister Dr TRB Rajaa were present at the MoU exchange between Amit Zavery, GM/VP and Head of Platform of Google Cloud, and Nanda Ramachandran, Vice President, Pixel Business Unit, Google; and Guidance Tamil Nadu, at Google’s Mountain View office.

In addition to the partnership with Google, Tamil Nadu has secured agreements with leading firms, including Nokia, PayPal, and Infinix, to establish new centres in key cities such as Coimbatore, Madurai, and Chennai. These partnerships are expected to enhance the state’s technological landscape further and create a robust ecosystem for AI innovation.

In a statement, Google said that the collaboration will focus on “initiatives in key areas such as AI start-up enablement, skilling, and industrial ecosystem enablement, including MSMEs, to create impactful, scalable AI solutions.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Amit Zavery, GM/VP and Head of Platform of Google Cloud, said:

We’re thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu Government on their journey towards an AI-powered future. This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI. We look forward to working together to build a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu that not only drives innovation and creates opportunities but also empowers individuals with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age.

Under the MoU, Google will work with Guidance, the Government of Tamil Nadu’s nodal agency for investment promotion and facilitation, to support the development of a robust AI ecosystem. This includes providing access to advanced technologies and resources and emphasising empowering individuals, businesses, and government entities to leverage AI for inclusive growth and progress.

Google already has a large presence in India, with offices in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, but this is its first major foray into Tamil Nadu.

This collaboration between Tamil Nadu and Google has the potential to transform the state’s digital landscape, positioning it as a leader in AI and innovation. Establishing the Tamil Nadu AI Labs in Chennai represents a significant leap towards achieving this vision, with the potential to impact industries, education, and the broader economy across the region.
