Scoodle, a London-based EdTech startup that connects students and tutors, has raised £1.4 million ($1.9 million) in its seed funding round led by Google for Startups.

Other investors including IFG Ventures and DA One also participated in the round. Scoodle had raised $760,000 in its pre-seed funding round in January 2020 from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Tiny VC, IFG Ventures, and a host of unnamed angels from Google, Miniclip, the University of Oxford, and others.

Founded by Ismail Jeilani, Imdad Ahad, and Mujavid Bukhari in 2017, Scoodle is an online learning platform that allows students to connect with tutors. The platform lets students post questions online to be answered by tutors who seek to boost their reputation in tutoring. It allows tutors to showcase their knowledge and talents by sharing answers and generate tutoring work.

Parents and students can assess a tutor before enquiring or booking a session and they can book the one that impressed them the most. Tutors can create their own comprehensive profiles to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise to students, showcasing answers to questions and sharing learning resources via a new video platform to garner more tutoring work.

Speaking about the platform, Ismail Jeilani, Co-founder and CEO of Scoodle, said,

“Everybody has something they want to learn, and something they can teach. We’re bringing them together. We’re building a world where an Arabic expert living in Egypt can create classes or share answers with students from around the world. The content that our tutors create on Scoodle lives on. This continues to benefit other students, long after the classes have ended.”

Scoodle claims to be the first such platform to offer 0% commission on bookings made and says its content-driven approach to tutoring sets it apart from other tutoring platforms.

Rachel Palmer, Head of VC and Startup Partnerships in EMEA at Google, said,

“Increasing access to quality education is one of the big opportunities that the tech sector provides, and we are really impressed with the speed of growth and the quality of execution that Ismail and his team have delivered to date.”

Scoodle said it has grown 10X in monthly users since the pandemic – largely driven by its growing content base. In 2020, the company shifted almost 70% of its tutoring bookings online.
