When Web3 first appeared in the public domain, little was known about the comprehensive transformation it would bring in the years to come. Since then, Web3 has proved to be a revolutionary concept, leading to a paradigm shift in how humankind operates. In education, the integration of Web3 technologies has bolstered digital learning, and global governments and other relevant authorities are aligning with this change, especially with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Metaverse.

Furthermore, as the world prioritizes skill-based education, making Web3 a core part of education has become imperative. For instance, India possesses up to 11% of the world’s total Web3 developers, making it the third-largest developer community globally. Initial estimates reveal that over 75,000 tech professionals with sufficient knowledge of blockchain technology fall into this figure, an aspect that is estimated to be enhanced by more than 100% in the coming years. In India, this provides a unique perspective to education authorities and all other stakeholders, as equipping Indian talents with sufficient knowledge regarding Web3 becomes more critical than ever. Furthermore, this comprehensive transformation impacts both sides of the same coin, as not only learners but also education itself shifts to integrate new state-of-the-art pedagogy, methodology, and practices, opening up a new horizon for the future.

Defining Web3 Education

The advent of Web3 further supplements the bid to democratize education, as it aims to streamline learning beyond classrooms irrespective of geographical indicators. While the term ‘Web3’ refers to the third and latest generation of the internet, it integrates aspects such as decentralization, user convenience and empowerment of learners through new-age innovative technologies such as Blockchain and P2P networks. As education’s digital approach expands, this aspect helps students access state-of-the-art decentralized education, irrespective of difficulties. Through Web3 education, a global community of individuals is being created where knowledge sharing and collaborations are taking precedence, transforming education as we know and perceive it.

Applications of Web3 Education

As skills-based education extends its reach and scope, Web3 education supports this comprehensive shift in numerous ways. To begin with, Web3 education transforms the existing state of education for enhanced learning through the metaverse. By integrating Web3 technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), students in a classroom-based system can use these technology-infused gadgets to comprehend complex topics better while being assisted by teachers as their digital twins. Furthermore, learning through the metaverse also allows students to back up their relevant credentials and other information, particularly in digital wallets. Through the integration of AR and VR, students are enabled with an immersive learning experience that supports better comprehension and an enhanced knowledge-sharing technique. This aspect transforms how education is perceived today.

Coupled with this, Web3’s holistic impact on transforming education extends beyond immersive experiences or truly digital classrooms. Through Web3 technologies, learners are empowered with smart searches that create a personalized searching experience, helping them gather specific information. This helps enhance time-savings while uniquely positioning learners, especially with the automation and knowledge development phases. Furthermore, Web3 education offers to transform education with decentralized sharing, essentially allocating learning materials and other data in a more methodical and streamlined manner. This aspect democratizes modern education, helping students with an enhanced accessibility aspect, especially one that supports learning.

These aforementioned aspects help to equip students with digital competency, also positioning them uniquely for decision-making. As students become equipped with these technologies, they can gather new information and upskill while learning critical thinking and decision-making skills. For students looking to begin their careers in the tech industry, Web3 education and relevant pedagogy become the catalyst for this change, as educational organizations and other sectoral stakeholders prioritize integrating new-age Web3 technologies such as AI, ML, and automation.

Furthermore, Web3 education enables teachers to gather a brand new perspective, leading to a comprehensive overhaul of digital classrooms and modern pedagogy. As teaching methodologies and learning processes expand their scope of work, it creates a more interactive funnel that connects teachers with students — opening up a new horizon for personalized education worldwide. In this aspect, students are no longer overly reliant on their teachers, as Web3 technologies converge to bridge the knowledge gap and enhance their respective learning abilities and experience.

Future Outlook

While the comprehensive paradigm shift in education continues, the scope of technological integration expands. This positions Web3 education in a unique light, putting it at the centre of learning in the coming years. Through its extensive technologies, the global education accessibility challenge can be addressed holistically while democratizing education through reduced expenditure and other new metrics. However, while this gradual transformation of global education continues, ensuring global scalability remains challenging owing to several obstacles.

However, these issues are being addressed, but it will require some time before Web3 establishes the status quo in new-age education.
