According to the father of Artificial Intelligence, John McCarthy, it is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs”.

To put in in simple terms wiki mentions of it as the theory and development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.

Speaking of artificial intelligence in the fields of education, we can already see a lot of new technologies evolving every day to make education better in many ways. And as technology in getting into education, Artificial Intelligence has a long way to go and many purposes to fulfill.

Checkout the pointers below that speak of the role of artificial intelligence has in edtech.

1. Shift in how we find and interact with the information.

Artificial Intelligence has already adapted to our needs. The ads we see on browsers, the way Siri adapts to our needs and various ecommerce recommending products on their platform are examples of artificial intelligence. All such things are based on our preferences, interests and what we look up on the web. AI-based systems have already radically changed how we interact with information and with newer, more integrated technology, students in the future may have vastly different experiences doing research and looking up facts than the students of today.

2. The major shift in the role of educator

By no means technology can ever replace educators. There will always be a role for teachers in education, but what that role is and what it entails may change due to new technology in the form of intelligent computing systems.

3. Taking away the load of grading from teachers

As I mentioned above that the role of educators will shift, this is one big thing that will help educators.

Most teachers feel that a significant amount of their time goes into grading which can be used otherwise in better ways. While Artificial Intelligence may not completely replace manual grading, it can get pretty close and help educators a lot with grading and assessments. Assessment platforms can auto-grade nearly all types of assessment items, even the subjective ones in near future allowing teachers to focus more on student interaction and development.

4. Artificial Intelligence to help students find the best school and program

Data powered by AI can change the way schools interact with their current and prospective students. Intelligent recommendation engines help students find the most suitable school or program based for their capabilities and interests. It can not only help students find the best fit but also help them with going through a guided training that can ease their transition between college and high school.

5. Artificial Intelligence can change the learning dimensions and how students acquire basic skills

While major changes may still take time, the reality is that artificial intelligence has the potential to radically change just about everything we take for granted about education.

Using AI systems, software, and support, students can learn from anywhere in the world at any time, and with these kinds of programs taking the place of certain types of classroom instruction, AI will make education not just accessible but way too efficient. Educational programs powered by AI are already helping students to learn basic skills, but as these programs grow and as developers learn more, they will likely offer students a much wider range of services.

The NMC Horizon Higher Ed Report 2017 talking about technology trends impacting higher education also highlights that AI has the potential to enhance online learning and research processes in ways that more intuitively respond to and engage with students.
