Language learning from an early age helps children to pick up languages very fast. This fact hasn’t gone unnoticed, evident from the plethora of language learning apps in the market.

If the sheer number of apps overwhelms you, look no further than our following list. Here are some handpicked English learning apps by Indian edtech startups for your kids to get started early.

1. Hello English kids
The makers of the award-winning Hello English App have come out with this kids’ version for the young patrons of the English language. This app is specially designed for toddlers, pre-schoolers, and early graders (currently for 1.5 – 10-year-old kids). The app builds & reinforces English skills through vocabulary development, and by polishing reading & listening comprehension skills.

The AI-driven app recommends activities based on the skills a child needs most and adapts to their pace of learning. It has a vast catalogue of games, activities, videos, rhymes, stories, and a lot more to browse through. This app also helps children work on other skills like storytelling, expression, fine and gross motor skills, imagination, role-playing, and more. This is a great starter app for English learning for the youngest of the lot.

2. OckyPocky
WhizKids created this amazing interactive English learning app for kids. OckyPocky assists children with their English learning needs using Artificial Intelligence/Natural Learning Processing behind the screens. It specifically caters to non-English speaking users with its vernacular content.

WhizKids runs with a motto, “Skills That Matter”. With this as their philosophy, they help children develop creativity and logical reasoning besides English skills. They recently raised funding to accommodate their exponentially growing userbase.

“Our servers crashed due to increase in traffic when the lockdown came into effect. We had to downsize to increase the runway. With the funding through Lead Angels, we went ahead on monetization and now plan to double the revenue every month. We believe we have a duty to democratize education access and promote skills that matter.” Amit Agrawal, Founder of the company.

3. Multibhashi: Spoken English Classes For Kids
Multibhashi is known for its language learning offering. The platform offers a range of language learning courses varied across international and Indian regional languages.

They also offer a course for children in spoken English skills. The course aims to help children grasp conversational language quickly to enable them to use it in their daily lives which – MultiBhashi claims – children are able to do after just a few sessions. Letting children grapple with the intricacies of the language more organically as they interact with native speakers makes the language learning more palatable.

On completing the course, the kids get a certificate of achievement. At the end of the course, students can understand simple phrases and expressions, speak, and understand basic English, decipher basic written information, and can even communicate with other people when spoken to clearly and slowly.

4. Kutuki
This early learning app is India’s first to use story and song-based curriculum to engage the youngest learners of the nation. Recognized among the winners in the e-learning category of the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge, Kutuki revolves around a story of 3 characters.

Children slowly grow close to the three adorable characters and end up having them as their learning companions. This ad-free app also has a unique picture book that takes kids on an English-learning journey across India. Important topics that the app covers are:

  •  Learning English Letter sounds through Phonics
  •  Learning English Alphabet Tracing/ Handwriting
  •  Building general knowledge and awareness- Emotions & Feelings, Sharing, Overcoming Fear, Overcoming Shyness, and a lot more.

5.PlanetSpark
The platform provides live online classes to K8 learners on English Communication, Public Speaking, Grammar, Creative Writing, Debating, Vlogging and other ‘new-age’ skills.

The platform uses gamified learning for pre-teen kids with mobile-based learning games, educational cartoons, board games, activity boxes, and workbooks.

With an aim to organize the private tuition sector in India, the company also partners with tuition centres and home-based tuition providers. It enables them with needed technology, apps, games, etc.

The platform also offers a free video-centric language learning platform, “PlanetSpark TV”. Every evening, users can claim free live classes.

“It builds their trust in the platform and that’s what drives user adoption. It also serves as a trial class for parents to gauge the service quality that we will get on the platform.”- says Manish Dhooper, Founder of the company.

6. Mastree
The platform provides multiple online courses for English learning. Students have a choice to pick from the 3 Capstone Projects they offer. These projects are further distributed across 5 levels, with each level correlating to specific grades. The platform is designed to help your child ace the English language across grades 1-12. Mastree’s application-based modules improve vocabulary, grammar, communication, and articulation. The platform does offer a free trial to let users get a feel of Mastree’s approach before investing in their courses.

7. Stones2Milestones
Stones2milestones is on a mission to ‘Create a Nation of Readers’. They believe that a child who doesn’t read at grade-level-expectancy by class 4 will never catch up! They want to make learning to read a conscious design of the curriculum. The focus is on enabling the skill to make reading easy and also on developing the will to make reading enjoyable. The platform is a great tool to not only equip children with the English language but also to help them develop and cultivate the habit of reading. As the window for this intervention is from ages 3 to age 9, they integrate this program with the early school curriculum. Besides providing this to schools, they also equip the parents to support the growth in their children.

Each of these language learning platforms has a unique focal point. You can pick which one appeals to you.
