The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has joined forces with Altair, based in the United States, to establish an eMobility Simulation Laboratory. According to the official release, the new lab will be set up in the Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras with financial support from Altair, a global provider of simulation, high-performance computing (HPC), and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.

The lab will host Altair’s modelling and simulation tools to support the academic activities that IIT Madras will carry out in the other eMobility labs for Batteries, Charging, Power Electronics, Motors and Controllers and Vehicle Engineering, among other related areas. Together, these facilities will support the multiple Academic initiatives that the Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, has started in eMobility, the statement added.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, hailed the launch and stated that IIT Madras needed to play a role in the academic sphere, considering the government’s focus on eMobility.

He added that eMobility-related initiatives in Academic Programmes, Research, and Policy are all managed and offered with the contribution of multiple departments, and the Department of Engineering Design acts as the nodal Department.

Vishwanath Rao, Managing Director of Altair, expressed confidence that the eMobility Simulation Lab at IIT Madras will significantly contribute to advancing research in the electric vehicle area and pave the way for sustainable transportation solutions.

The key results expected from the eMobility Simulation Lab are as follows:

  • Enhance student learning in related courses.
  • Support academic projects and research.
  • Complement skilling initiatives in the eMobility domain.

Prof. CS. Shankar Ram, Head of the Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras, highlighted the series of initiatives that the Department has been doing for the last three years and stated that the vision is to have these initiatives make the Department a hub for all eMobility-related matters.

Altair’s comprehensive, open-architecture simulation, artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and data analytics solutions empower organizations to develop better, more efficient, sustainable products and processes that will pave the way for tomorrow’s innovations. Its simulation and design technology covers many disciplines, including structures, motion, fluids, thermal management, electromagnetics, electronic design, system modelling, and more, allowing users to build better products and processes faster.
