BYJU’S, the world’s most valuable edtech company, today released the findings from a nation-wide survey which reveals that there has been a significant shift in the mindset of Indian parents towards online learning.

  • 70% parents revealed that their children used online learning for the first time during the lockdown
  • 75% parents surveyed said they want their children to continue learning through online channels/mediums even after schools reopen

The survey, conducted in June 2020, received over 5000 responses from parents across 18 cities who had at least one child studying in K-12.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Divya Gokulnath, Co-Founder, BYJU’S, “Safety emerged as the strongest trigger for a majority of parents to try online learning for the first time during the lockdown. But the real mindset shift has taken place because parents have witnessed the effectiveness of digital learning in real time. 78% of the parents we surveyed also said that in addition to attending online lessons conducted by their schools, their child was also using at least one other online platform(s) to meet their learning needs. This is because online learning is not about directly converting offline learning online - it’s about using technology as an enabler to make learning engaging and effective. At BYJU’S, all our learning programs are designed with engagement at their core to make students truly enjoy learning and keep coming back for more.”

Divya also added, “It’s encouraging to see that 63% of parents feel online learning has been beneficial for their children. At a time when parents' major concerns about sending their children to physical classes are the lack of safety, personal guidance, and instant doubt-solving along with the time it takes to travel; our latest offering ‘BYJU’S Classes’ addresses all their needs. With BYJU'S Classes, we want to offer the highest quality of home-learning experiences to our students so they can safely continue learning from home even during these uncertain times.”

The key findings of the survey are:

Significant behavioural change in the parent’s mindset

The survey revealed that there has been a significant behavioral change in the parent’s mindset as they have accepted online learning as the new normal for their kids. Nearly 70% of parents reveal that kids used online learning for the first time during the lockdown while 75% of them would want their kids to continue some form of online learning after lockdown ends. The majority of parents outgrew their inhibitions towards online learning during the lockdown and 63% felt that online learning has proved beneficial during the lockdown. 61% parents said they would recommend other parents to try online learning for their children.

Safety emerges as a major trigger behind online learning adoption during the lockdown

58% said they tried online learning platforms so their child wouldn’t need to leave home during this pandemic in order to learn. Parents also felt that this format is more interactive and effective and offers the flexibility of schedule and format that helps their children to learn better.

Parents prefer online learning as preferred tuitions even in the post COVID World

85% of the parents surveyed believe after-school personalized tuitions are a necessary element in the child’s learning journey. A whopping 90% of them do not want their children to go to a physical tutoring class soon rather would prefer online learning. The survey further revealed that 89% of parents feel that they will sign up for a personalized online tutoring experience to compensate for the lack of tuitions.
