subject, don’t you ever feel the need of a single comprehensive source which highlights information on quality, rather than quantity? I’m certain that every one of you do realize such a need most of the times. To address to such needs, as an open resource for personalized learning, HippoCampus.org was designed as part of a worldwide effort to improve access to quality education for everyone.

HippoCampus.org is a free, core academic web site that delivers rich multimedia content- videos, animations, simulations and other credible information on a wide range of general education subjects to middle-school and highschool teachers, college professors, and students, free of charge. HippoCampus is powered by the NROC Project, a non-profit, member-driven project focused on new models of digital content development, distribution, and use. Teachers project HippoCampus content during classroom learning and assign it for computer labs and homework. Students use the site after their school hours for study and exam preparation.

You do not need to register or log in to use the site. However, to create your own playlists of content from HippoCampus on any other website, customize HippoCampus to your subject or notebook and share your custom sites with others, you need to register to create an account for free.

You can find a variety of subjects namely, Math- Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry, Calculus and Advanced Math, Statistics and Probability; Natural Science- Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science; Social Science- Economics, History and Government, Psychology, Sociology; Humanities- English and Religion. You can also browse collections of short courses from platforms such as, Khan Academy, Dallas Learning Solutions, SIATech, NROC Library and more.

Here are the steps on how to use HippoCampus:

  • From the HippoCampus homepage, select an area of study from the Browse Subjects menu. Clicking the name of a subject will open a Subject Page.
  • Each Subject Page features three tabs: Browse Topics, Launch a Course, and Textbook Correlations.
  • Browse Topics tab lists Presentations, Worked Examples, and Simulations available for a subject. Some subjects, such as Algebra & Geometry, also offer a Test Prep option.
  • Select any item on the left to display a list of individual topics in the middle column. Clicking on a Topic name loads that media into the Media Window.
  • Clicking the Launch a Course tab displays a list of all the available full courses for that subject.
  • Clicking on a course name populates the Media Window with a graphic from which you can launch the full course. Full courses include multiple resources that vary slightly from course to course. These may include a course syllabus, objectives, readings, key terms, assignments, discussion questions, and self-assessments.
  • Clicking the Textbook Correlations tab displays all the textbooks that have been indexed by HippoCampus Topics for that subject.
  • Clicking the name of a textbook populates the right column with Topics from HippoCampus correlated to that textbook’s page. Clicking a page number/Topic in the right column launches the Topic in the Media Window.
  • Another way to find content at HippoCampus is with the Search tool. Type a word or phrase into the Search box to search the multimedia content on a Subject Page.

The site also includes Blogs created by teachers, for teachers, which include ideas and activities which can used by teachers to bring HippoCampus content into the classroom creatively. Most subject areas also contain links included by the experts to guide users to other helpful teaching resources on the Web. Besides being available for free individual use, HippoCampus.org is also available for institutional use through the NROC Network, subject to a Membership fee.

This site is easy to navigate with its user-friendly interface. It comes as a perfect tool to help teachers teach with the use of technology, organize their study resources in one place and be assured of being provided with quality information. Students find it of great help during homework, self-study and exam preparations. It facilitates sharing of resources within its users which enhances the quality and reliability of information even more.

So, if you’re a teacher who is flipping your classroom, a student struggling with a concept, or a parent who just wants to assist your child through studies please visit HippoCampus.org to avail of its tremendous services.

We invite you to seek any clarifications you may need on the context and share with us any additional information you may have about the same. The Comment Box awaits you.
