Course Hero, an online learning platform that offers course-specific study resources, has acquired Scribbr, a proofreading and editing service for academic writing for an undisclosed amount.
With this acquisition, Course Hero plans to expand its footprint in Europe, since Scribbr is a Netherlands-based business.
Founded in 2012, Scribbr is one of the fastest-growing startups in the Netherlands. With a team of more than 700 freelance editors, the platform edits theses and dissertations, detects plagiarism, generates citations, and provides helpful academic writing guides in the extensive Knowledge Base.
Scribbr is on a mission to help students become better academic writers. It also provides high-quality services by placing a strong emphasis on teamwork, empowerment, technology and innovation, continuous improvement, and fun at work.
Course Hero, started in 2016 by Andrew Grauer, supports students on their unique learning journey as they seek help and resources to better understand their coursework, prepare for exams, learn and remember. Students can subscribe or contribute their own resources to access millions of learning materials including practice problems, study guides, textbooks solutions, and step-by-step explanations for every subject.
According to Grauer, the company’s mission is to create a question-and-answer platform with extreme levels of specificity for students. It sells subscriptions to students that unlock access to all of its learning and teaching content, which include course-specific material created by teachers and publishers.
Scribbr is Course Hero’s latest acquisition, previously the company acquired CliffNotes, Litcharts, QuillBot and Symbolab, all powered by a duo of financings that saw the EdTech platform valued at $1.1 billion.
The company claims to have more than 80,000 faculty across the United States, Canada, and Australia who joined the community to share their resources, collaborate with other faculty, and hone strategies for instruction. With its headquarters in Redwood City, California, the startup has office hubs throughout the US, Canada, Israel, and India.
With the combination of product innovation and a strategic yet values-centered approach to acquisitions, Course Hero believes that the company is in a unique position to help anyone learn better, faster, and more affordably.
Last year in December, Course Hero Inc had raised $380M in a Series C funding round led by Wellington Management with participation from new investors Sequoia Capital Global Equities, among others.
