Tech giant Google has announced a strategic partnership with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to enhance access to quality education across India. This collaboration empowers students, parents, and teachers by providing engaging and accessible educational content.

As part of this initiative, NCERT will launch multiple YouTube channels covering grades 1 to 12 over the coming months. These channels will offer educational content in 29 Indian languages, including Indian Sign Language, making learning accessible to diverse learners.

Jonathan Katzman, Director of Product Management at YouTube Learning, emphasized the importance of learning in a Google blog post. He stated, “Learning has always been at the heart of YouTube. And, in India, where accessible education is crucial for unlocking the nation’s potential, YouTube can help make learning content more accessible through innovative partnerships, tools, and resources.”

In addition to the YouTube channels, Google has partnered with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) to launch Credentialled Courses. NPTEL now offers 50 credentialed courses on diverse subjects, from pure sciences and literature to sports psychology and rocket propulsion. This initiative creates a pathway for anyone outside the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) system to complete a course on NPTEL’s YouTube channels, complete the online certification on the NPTEL-SWAYAM portal, and receive a certificate from the IITs.

Google has launched Key Concepts to help students study even more effectively. This function uses artificial intelligence to identify concepts mentioned in a movie and provide definitions from a network of those concepts, spanning biology, physics, and chemistry. The definitions and graphics are obtained from Google’s Knowledge Graph using the film’s transcript and other accompanying video metadata.

Katzman added, “Through this initiative, a pathway has been created for anyone outside the IIT system to be able to do a course on NPTEL’s Youtube channels, complete the online certification on the NPTEL-SWAYAM portal, and get a certificate from the IITs.” He further mentioned, “More courses will be rolled out in the coming months.

Google’s YouTube Player for Education is another innovative product designed to improve how YouTube videos are shown in popular educational tools. Partners use the YouTube Player for Education to create diverse learning experiences, including interactive lessons, supplemental study, and formative assessment. In India, Google Classroom and edtech companies such as Quizizz and Teachmint have integrated the player into their tools, and it is being used in classrooms worldwide.

Earlier this year, YouTube announced the AI Skills House programme, which provides access to Google’s flagship AI courses on YouTube, such as Introduction to Generative AI, Introduction to Responsible AI, and Introduction to Large Language Models. These courses, available at no cost, will soon be expanded to 7 Indian languages.

The cooperation between Google and NCERT is a huge step forward in harnessing technology to improve education quality in India. It highlights the potential of new alliances to alter the educational landscape and unleash the nation’s potential. This initiative is consistent with the broader trend of integrating technology into education, as evidenced by the rise of edtech companies and the increased usage of AI in Learning and teaching. As the collaboration develops, it will be interesting to observe how it affects India’s education system and how it can inspire similar projects worldwide.
