In partnership with the Swayam Plus initiative of the Union Education Ministry, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has recently launched a skill-based training programme for semiconductor industry students and graduates. This Programme is intended for Engineering and Science students and graduates from the Electronics / Electrical / Mechanical / Manufacturing / Production disciplines.

This short-term training programme will be taught in physical mode at IIT Madras and will focus on the semiconductor Industry. It offers placement assistance for high-performing students and will make them industry-ready by skilling them with hands-on training. Furthermore, this Programme aims to inspire students and industry partners to pursue careers in electronics and tackle challenging scientific problems relevant to societal needs and sustainable growth.

SWAYAM Plus is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and IIT Madras. It was launched in line with the National Education Policy’s focus on promoting and encouraging employability-focused skilling courses. It aims to build employable skills among graduates across sectors critical to India’s growth and align industry skills with academic courses, thereby bridging the gap.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Prof. R. Sarathi, Dean (Planning), IIT Madras, said:

Skills development is a National movement to provide Indians with opportunities to fully develop their potential throughout their lives, regardless of their prior experience. Through this movement, every individual’s skills, passion, and contributions will drive India’s next development phase towards an advanced economy and inclusive society.

Prof. R. Sarathi added:

These training programmes aim to bridge the gap between idealized concepts learned from the foundational courses in engineering and the real world. Our experience indicates a need to strengthen the skills needed in general engineering and build an intuition in relation to that. The contents of the training programme for engineering students are identified through the skill gap between the engineering curriculum and practising engineering.

SWAYAM Plus will issue the participation certificate in association with IIT Madras and IITM Pravartak. Accommodation will be offered at the IIT Madras campus at a basic cost of INR 650/—per day per student, which includes food and stay. Requests for accommodation can be made four days before the start of the respective training slots.

The List of Short-Term Courses includes:

Comprehensive Electronics and Embedded Systems:

This 9-day course offers extensive hands-on training in Electronics, covering basic circuit theory, analogue and digital circuits, sensors and instrumentation, and Arduino microcontrollers. The course includes application-based design using sensors to measure temperature, humidity, light, sound, and human pulse rate, with the values displayed on an LCD. Additionally, will cover relay activation, servo/stepper motor control, and the use of switches and matrix keypads.

Comprehensive Electronics and Advanced Embedded Technology with IoT:

These 14-day training sessions include smart automation and control projects with sensor integration. Participants will gain exposure to the latest embedded controllers, such as Arduino, PIC, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32, focusing on essential coding techniques like loops, arrays, and interrupts.

Advanced Electronic Manufacturing with Power Electronics fundamental:

This 11-day training includes PCB Assembly and all processes involved in soldering, an understanding of SMT reflow soldering, PCBA inspection systems, Power Electronics, PWM basics, Embedded system design with STM 32 microcontroller, Configuration of GPIO ports, LCD display interface, servo and stepper motor interface using STM 32, and more.

Digital Manufacturing Practice:

This 12-day training offers a comprehensive and practical approach to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and real-world manufacturing processes. With the right blend of theory (20%) and experiential understanding (80%), skills such as simple quantification, back-of-the-envelope calculations, quick engineering drawings, use of the right tools, classification/taxonomy fundamentals and systems approach to planning and execution will be introduced and strengthened.

IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation is a Section 8 Company housing a Technology Innovation Hub on Sensors, Networking, Actuators and Control Systems. It is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and hosted by IIT Madras.
