In an innovation for India, a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has introduced an AI teacher, Iris. Iris, a humanoid developed in partnership with Makerlabs Edutech Private Limited, marks a significant step towards integrating artificial intelligence in education. It was unveiled at KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram to enhance students’ learning experiences.

Makerlabs posted a video of Iris on Instagram, highlighting its potential to transform education. The company wrote, “With IRIS, we’ve set out to revolutionize education by harnessing the power of AI to create a truly personalized learning experience”. The video demonstrates Iris’s interactive capabilities and its role as a versatile teaching tool.

Iris, built as part of the NITI Aayog-initiated Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project, has several features that revolutionize traditional teaching methods. With the ability to speak three languages and tackle complex questions, the robot offers a personalized learning journey for each student. Its features include voice assistance, interactive learning modules, manipulation capabilities, and mobility, making it an invaluable asset in the classroom. The Iris humanoid moves on four wheels turns its head both ways and can also move its hands. The microphones are kept as necklaces on Iris, and a speaker is used to talk back.

The Central Government provided a grant of Rs 20 lakh to this private, unaided school to establish the Atal Tinkering Lab. This school regularly participates in the state youth festival and the state school science festival, which helped them bag this project, which is otherwise only given to government-aided schools.

Makerlabs envisions Iris as more than simply a robot; it is an innovative voice assistant explicitly designed for educational purposes. Iris, powered by Robotics and Generative AI technologies, promises to deliver seamless and responsive performance.

As pioneers in educational technology, Makerlabs is committed to empowering learners of all ages to explore, create, and innovate in the digital age. The platform, with its STEM Toys and IRIS—the world’s first AI ROBOT Teacher—is a partner in unlocking the potential of tomorrow’s innovators.
