Maharashtra is all set to establish the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university, marking a huge step forward in technical growth. This initiative, announced by State Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar, seeks to establish Maharashtra as a hub for AI education, research, and innovation. The task force comprises experts from academia, industry and government. It will focus on developing an institution based on AI education, research and innovation.

The proposed Artificial Intelligence University will be a centre of excellence, encouraging collaboration among essential stakeholders such as educational institutions, corporate organizations, and government agencies. It aims to promote research and development in AI and related subjects while providing students and professionals with specific skills in new technologies.

The university will specialize in fundamental AI disciplines, including Machine Learning (ML), data science, robotics, and automation, while also promoting partnerships with global tech corporations, research establishments, and startup ecosystems. The state government aims to bring a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, finance, and innovative governance. The ultimate objective is to address the skill gap by cultivating the next generation of AI engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Further, the institution will be a hub for policy research and ethical AI advancement.

Addressing the gathering, IT minister of Maharashtra Ashish Shelar said, “The AI University will be a centre of excellence, fostering collaboration between industry, academia, and government. This initiative will not only position us as a global leader in AI but also contribute to India’s technological advancement.” “The task force has held two meetings and is working on finalizing the roadmap for the university’s establishment. The government’s decision reflects its commitment to making Maharashtra a hub for technology and innovation,” he further stated.

The Principal Secretary of the Information Technology Department chairs the committee. It includes directors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai. Representatives from leading technology firms such as Google India, Mahindra Group, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) are also part of the team. Additionally, officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, and the Data Security Council of India will contribute their expertise to the project.

AI experts believe that the rise of AI and the establishment of such a university will place Maharashtra at the forefront of technological progress. Apart from India, several other countries have already installed AI education systems, with top AI universities in the US, UK, France, and China.

The Maharashtra government’s decision to establish this institution demonstrates its proactive attitude to realizing artificial intelligence’s potential. As artificial intelligence continues to transform sectors worldwide, this project will likely boost India’s standing in the global technological scene.
