NetSupport, a classroom management solution used worldwide, has recently revealed the findings of a survey that asked educators who manage or utilize technology about the use and benefits of educational technology in their schools. Educators were asked about the challenges they face and whether more significant funding, training, or other assistance would improve the usefulness of educational technology.

Given the growth in the number of EdTech tools used per school district reported by LearnPlatform—tripling between 2017 and 2023—NetSupport sought feedback from classroom teachers, IT personnel, and administrators on how well-equipped educators are in using and managing technology. Some of the findings are:

  • 93 percent of educators believed that educational technology improves teaching and learning.
  • When asked who was responsible for ensuring that education technology was used successfully, 34 percent responded to teachers. 27 percent of respondents said IT staff was responsible for ensuring that education technology was used successfully, while an equal number said it was the responsibility of school officials.
  • When asked what would be most beneficial in maximizing the use of technology, 32 percent indicated they wanted more time to learn and improve how to use classroom technology effectively. At the same time, 22% said they needed more training time. These two responses, comprising 54 percent, are nearly double the 28 percent who said they wanted additional funding to purchase technology.
  • 10 percent of respondents stated they wanted fewer technology tools and a simplified approach to classroom technology.

Al Kingsley, author of several books, including My #EdTech Diary, Speaker, and the CEO of NetSupport, commented on the findings:

These results support our experience working with teachers and education leaders. Across the globe and in the United States, educators say that devices and learning technology offer significant benefits. Still, we must recognize the pressing need to give teachers proper training and time to manage the technology they are currently using.

Kingsley added:

Furthermore purchasing technology must be based on clearly stated goals. The fact that respondents to this survey suggested that teachers, IT staff, and school leaders shared roughly the same amount of responsibility, which indicates confusion about who is responsible for such decisions. There is more clarity about responsibilities when the decision to purchase is based on clearly stated objectives.
