Journey

Our lives are an ever-evolving journey of transitions and fluid states. We glide from one state to another with every heartbeat, every thought and every breath.

JourneyFeedback for GrowthFrom Theory to Tailored PracticeChanging Education LandscapeThe Driving Force

States, the cornerstone of our conversation about change and progress, guide us. Picture a child navigating the world, continually testing the limits of “can” and “can’t.” Scribbling on walls, playfully yanking a cat’s tail, and even daring to probe electrical outlets – it’s a wondrous exploration. Yet, this adventure is gently overseen by a parent or guardian, showing the child the boundaries of what’s permissible and safeguarding them from undesirable consequences.

In a child’s world, feedback is a treasure trove of wisdom, second only to the warmth of parental love. Thus, a child presents their kindergarten artwork with eager anticipation, seeking those precious words: “This is amazing! You’ve done an exceptional job capturing that beautiful house, your loving mom, or your favorite feline friend.”

As the child matures, school grades become the compass. They guide both the student and their parents, illuminating areas for growth and strengths to enhance. This transformation embraces continuous feedback – within peer interactions and collaborative school endeavors. The child may find themselves benched when a sports mishap leads to a team’s loss, yet center stage in a theater performance, captivating an extensive audience. Feedback catalyses improvement, nurturing the child’s understanding of how their actions shape their emotional and intellectual landscapes.

Feedback for Growth

Transitioning to adolescence, reading takes on a new complexity. The allure of deferred rewards struggles to align with teenage impatience. A true affinity for reading arises when a teenager embarks on the journey of mindful reading. The school curriculum facilitates this transformation, assigning readings and essays that culminate in timely feedback. Swift evaluations inspire tenacity, instilling a newfound interest in reading after repeated attempts.

And so, the narrative unfolds into the realm of higher education. As university life commences, initial exams challenge resolve, and the first foray into the workforce beckons. Notably, research asserts that companies cultivating a culture of continuous feedback witness a marked elevation in employee performance.

Understanding feedback is akin to deciphering the compass guiding our journey. Feedback extends beyond mere affirmation or correction; it must encapsulate one’s present position, desired destination, and the successive steps that pave the way to that cherished goal. In the late 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus unearthed a cognitive quirk – humans tend to discard around 50% of freshly acquired information within an hour. Within a day, this forgetfulness burgeons to a staggering 70%.

Feedback to Growth Chart

The same principles that govern feedback about our actions resonate with the art of learning. The temporal gap between action and feedback inversely impacts its value.

Imagine mastering tennis through one-on-one coaching or honing surfing skills by reviewing recorded videos on the same day. In these instances, the proximity of feedback to the act itself is crucial. The immediacy of confirmation or correction amplifies its significance.

From Theory to Tailored Practice

In the realm of education, a remarkable shift is palpable across the global landscape. Traditional knowledge disseminated in colleges and higher education institutions often needs improvement in its practical application. Aspiring professionals increasingly seek avenues to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Boot camps and online schools have surged, offering tailored instruction in high-demand IT fields. Diverse teaching methodologies range from self-paced modules, replete with pre-recorded video lessons, to platforms staffed with mentors for consistent engagement and assignment review.

Yet, achieving completion rates for online courses spanning over three months hovers around 60%. The ebb and flow of motivation, influenced by instructional content, educators, and communication dynamics, contribute to this trend. This phenomenon mirrors user onboarding within applications – the need to understand one’s progression is universal.

Enter innovative methods like AI-powered training. They cater to the need for instant feedback, a missing link for many learners. Language practice or skill development must no longer hinge on a teacher’s availability. A voice assistant offers speaking practice, while apps like Loora AI provide real-time pronunciation assessment. Developers refine coding skills through competitions while budding designers independently train with tools like BeFront.

This journey leads us to the crux of the matter: Change is an intricate, gradual process. Mastery isn’t achieved overnight; it demands resilience, patience, and an insatiable curiosity. Seek immediate feedback, inquire, maintain a consistent learning rhythm, revisit prior lessons, and sprinkle your endeavors with an unyielding passion.

Changing Education Landscape

We are seeing a paradigm shift in how we perceive information and utilise the potential of instant feedback.

This evolution underscores a universal truth: the journey of transformation is gradual and often unperceivable. Mastery is an intricate mosaic woven together by persistence, dedication, and unwavering curiosity. It’s not possible to wake up one morning as a consummate professional, an engineering virtuoso, or an expert in any field. Progress requires consistent effort, a thirst for knowledge, and an insatiable hunger to improve.

The core lesson from this expansive narrative reverberates: endeavor to reduce errors as you embark on learning something new. Understand the vital importance of instant feedback. The coding you write – does it set the stage for scalable success, or does it harbor lurking errors? The design you craft – will it resonate with users or inadvertently lead them astray? For most students today, waiting several days for an instructor or mentor to review assignments disrupts the cadence of learning. In this disruptive gap, students either struggle to retain sequential knowledge, leading to a fragmented understanding, or lose their enthusiasm altogether.

Perhaps this void catalysed the surge of interest in novel learning approaches – a myriad of simulators and AI-powered assistants. They provide a conduit for immediate feedback. No more longing for a teacher’s guidance – chatbots, algorithms, and interactive platforms bridge the gap. The appeal of these tools lies in their agility, the ability to adapt to the learner’s pace, answer questions, and provide guidance when required.

The Driving Force

What emerges from this tapestry of insights? Change is the product of steadfast effort and unceasing determination. Overnight metamorphosis is an illusion. To unravel the mysteries of bridge engineering or master the art of automotive navigation, persistence is key. Whether you’re a coder, a designer, a linguist, or a budding entrepreneur, the journey remains consistent – seek out the path of instant feedback, grasp it, and pave the way for your own evolution.
