With tech integration, the reach and accessibility of education is spreading at a very fast pace and people are being able to study whatever they want with a great ease now. All thanks to educational technologies and Internet being the key part that must be mentioned to make all of this happen in the online education space.

Almost all of the services that are helping people around globe in EdTech are web enabled. But sadly 60% of the world is still offline that means that more than half population of the world does not have access to Internet. But 60% of the population will not suffer the education loss due to this reason.

To help that 60%, nonprofit startup, Learning Equality, builds tools to bring online learning resources to communities with limited or no Internet, who urgently need better educational opportunities.

Everybody knows about the great services people are getting from the Khan Academy, an online platform providing free education around the globe.

Khan Academy is a great influencer in this scene with a greater impact on EdTech sector. But to provide the Khan Academy’s education offline Learning Equality came up with KA Lite, open-source offline-installable Khan Academy platform, that reached an estimated 2.1 million learners in over 160 countries, in contexts like rural schools, orphanages, community centers, refugee camps, prisons, and homes providing equal education opportunities to everyone.

With a belief that poverty and lack of education forms a vicious circle, the only savior can be education that can break the cycle of poverty and open the door to human flourishing making the weaker section aware, educated, opening the doors to many opportunities. Learning equality is all set to build a second-generation platform, Kolibri, which will enable seamless offline distribution of a broad range of openly licensed educational content to support blended and self-paced learning in low-resource settings.

They are working directly with Indiegogo to create a high-profile campaign, which will be shared by the Khan Academy.

Kolibri is open-source, and built to enable seamless authoring, peer-to-peer sharing, and engaging interaction with educational content offline. Learning Equality is working to combine a vast library of educational content from numerous sources all over the internet, and make the content available completely offline on low cost devices. Instructors and organizations will be able to create locally relevant customized educational curricula that fit their regional context, by remixing open content and materials they create themselves. Kolibri will also include tools for self-paced, collaborative learning to provide instant feedback for students and teachers, and personalized recommendations to enable students to work at their own pace with support from mentors and peers.

How will it work?

— The platform only needs one time download in any smart device from any area that has Internet connection.

— Once downloaded that device can share new content and other updates with other offline devices.

— They’re building a prototype of a tool that will allow organizations to upload and curate their own educational content. Anyone can bundle and distribute their content into custom created channels, allowing communities to align content with local curricular standards to best serve the needs of their learners.

— Kolibri can be accessed on any device be it Android, Windows, or iOS.

— Video Compressor: convert any giant video in “byte-sized videos” without affecting the quality. Select elements on the video by clicking and dragging your mouse around them. You can change their position and size!

— Self Paced Learning: Kolibri will be installed with evaluation tools such as coach reports that will be detailed progress reports of students providing an overall picture of their learning growth; customized quizzes and exercises that can be created easily over the platform and helps learners practice what they have learned and a recommendation tool that displays useful and relevant content that is based on how a learner engages with their content.

— Kolibri supports video, audio, documents, interactive exercises and embedded HTML5 apps to give learners a diverse and engaging learning experience in order to best support their learning.

Quality education is a right of every student be it online or offline. And those who are offline must not be deprived of it. Things are changing and Kolibri is helping to bring that change. What are your views about Kolibri?
