IN-SPACe, in partnership with ISRO and leading academic institutions, announced a comprehensive short-term course focused on Orbital Mechanics, Attitude Dynamics and Control, Space-Based Navigation, and Mission Planning to foster skill development in industry and academia in the space sector. The course gives students hands-on experience in various aspects of space technology, such as mission planning, launch window optimization, and dealing with mission constraints. This 2nd five-day residential programme started on December 17, 2023, at ISRO Guest House, Devanahalli, Bengaluru.

IN-SPACe claims that the course draws on the expertise of experienced faculty from ISRO, leading academic institutions and industry. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, providing a foundation for future space scientists and engineers. According to the official statement, the course is open to academicians, industry executives, graduates, postgraduates and researchers; the course offers in-depth exposure to developing mission profiles, optimizing launch windows and navigating the challenges inherent in space missions.

IN-SPACe is responsible for promoting, enabling, authorizing, and supervising various non-governmental space activities, such as building launch vehicles and satellites and providing space-based services, sharing space infrastructure and premises under the control of DOS/ISRO, and establishing new space infrastructure and facilities.

The agency serves as a liaison between ISRO and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), assessing how to utilize India’s space resources better and increase space-based activities. It also considers the needs and demands of private players, such as educational and research institutions, and investigates ways to meet these demands in collaboration with ISRO.

Speaking about the development, Director & Promotion Directorate of IN-SPACe, Vinod Kumar, said:

This initiative is a learning platform created by IN-SPACe to translate the government’s vision for the space sector into tangible skills and knowledge in space technology. The course contents are designed to train participants in developing the ‘brain’ of a satellite, that is, the onboard computer and other systems, to enable the satellite to perform autonomously in space. The course will empower individuals with the skills needed to contribute significantly to India’s space missions and nurture the next generation of space specialists.

The course’s curriculum is designed to equip participants with the fundamental principles and hands-on experience to plan and optimize space mission operations. The programme will include immersive training on mission profile development, optimizing launch windows, and dealing with mission constraints. The ANSYS Team will lead sessions on the practical aspects of Spacecraft Orbit Modelling and Spacecraft Simulation Environment, while the MathWorks India team will lead sessions on AI for space applications using MATLAB.
