Traditional academia is often highlighted as the most important aspect of students’ scholastic journeys worldwide. While the focus on learning languages, humanities, mathematics, science and others can be understood, what cannot be is the subsequent avoidance of learning associative skills that have been developed in recent years. Education across levels has become all-encompassing, and the focus has also shifted from a theoretical to a practical approach, emphasising a skill-based system. All stakeholders, including parents, students and teachers — need to be integrated into this new collaborative approach, as the objective of education has transformed in the last few decades. As a result, the corporate world is now inclined to pick diversely skilled candidates more than degrees. For most scenarios, individuals with entrepreneurial skills trump their conventionally educated peers through their decision-making, team management, ownership and other relevant skills.

This paradigm shift in hiring practices is based on industry requirements. Candidates who can think innovatively and are equipped with diverse skills like problem-solving and a solutions-oriented mindset lead to the long-term growth of their prospective employers, leading to a premium on their hiring. While these may seem easy to grasp, entrepreneurial skills remain highly complex and analytical, offering an undeterred edge to students looking to future-proof their professional lives. The significance of implementing an entrepreneurial skill-driven education system is being considered era-appropriate by educationists as well, thoroughly based on the transformation of the employment scenario, as well as workplaces and workforces. Human resources are considered the most valuable in today’s competitive business domain. It is becoming crucial for students to adopt a decisive mindset that supplements their career aspirations efficiently, driven by entrepreneurial skills.

Why is it important?

Entrepreneurial spirit defines the present business domain. If we dive deep into India’s startup sector, the country had only 480 registered startups in 2010. This number has since grown to 1.27 lakhs in April 2024, in 14 years. This massive increase underlines the students’ ambition, which is no longer limited to becoming public servants, doctors or engineers — but to establishing and running innovative businesses and attaining autonomy, financial independence and career versatility. However, there remains a fine line between operating a business and profitability, which can be seen in the number of Unicorns. India has less than 120 unicorns, while lakhs of other startups remain engaged in achieving product vitality. Some part of this boils down to fundamental aspects such as entrepreneurial skills, which can empower today’s students to become future innovators, successfully running profitable companies.

Future Preparation

Before understanding why entrepreneurial skills are becoming imperative for students to upskill themselves, it’s important to understand that not all students will become entrepreneurs or want to become one. However, at the same time, these skills are important to establishing or operating businesses and can profoundly impact shaping professional careers. Irrespective of career choices, originality, innovation, leadership qualities, communication skills, networking, strategic planning, problem-solving and financial management are fundamental aspects of eventual success and can significantly influence general choices. By exposing students to these life skills, students can be empowered to attain their full potential or even break their ceiling to master their most effective persona. This also helps students to navigate occupational difficulties by overcoming them constructively.

Innovative & Critical Thinking

Popular belief dictates that an individual needs a significant cache of wealth or backing to become an entrepreneur — but it is not. Anyone can open a business and become an entrepreneur. Similarly, any student at any level can learn entrepreneurial skills that promote inclusivity — a crucial factor in developing innovative and critical thinking. These skills help individuals to discipline their thought processes and align with the difficulties in front of them. This helps them develop efficient ideas that help them easily overcome these difficulties. Innovative and critical thinking also enables individuals to ascertain potential obstacles well ahead of time and develop ideas that help them overcome them.

In other words, these skills can help students develop age-appropriate abilities that enhance their efficiency during difficult periods while effectively driving professional desires. It also helps them to align themselves with the global transformation and challenging environments to achieve success. These entrepreneurial skills lead to collective growth while providing strategic advantages over peers.

Confidence & Resolve

Self-doubt and lack of resolve can affect anyone, and the most driven professionals often come to question themselves during difficult periods. Entrepreneurial skills can be effective tools to address this challenge, as they help boost young learners’ confidence and resolve. It empowers them by incorporating resilience, passion, and grit into their moral fibre, helping them to learn ways to cope with stress, difficulties, or even failure. Through entrepreneurial skill-based training, students understand to take calculated risks and commit to hard work to reach their objectives efficiently. This results in students becoming more determined than ever before, helping them to ensure personal and professional growth by overcoming challenges.
