1. Edmodo

Edmodo is a full-featured social network designed for the educational environment with a focus on K-12. Teachers can use Edmodo as an online blackboard and inbox. They can post polls, quizzes, and assignment guidelines, and invite students to submit finished assignments. It has the look of Facebook, which grabs students’ interest, but it also has controls in place to help protect their privacy and promote positive interactions among students and teachers. Students can only create accounts with a teacher’s permission, and teachers have access to manage student privileges. Students use the group code they obtain from a teacher to set up accounts and connect with additional teachers. In the typical social media style, they can write posts that include embedded media, links, and images. Teachers can see whatever is posted and can choose to moderate posts or put students on read-only mode.

Individual teachers can create virtual classrooms, but a district can get a free subdomain, and that version has many features that help you use Edmodo to interact with other teachers and engage in professional development. Edmodo has launched a premium package of analytics, prioritized training and support, and student synchronization.

2. Moodle

With a user base of over 56 million students and More than 5.9 million courses available in 120 languages, Moodle is an all-in-one online interface that is completely open source and extremely customizable. It enables educators to host a classroom with thousands of students.

It has a huge community of users and developers that support its growth all over the world. It’s available in 120 languages and allows for class sizes ranging from a few students to millions. Moodle features a simplistic drag and drop interface to take advantage of popular functions like the forums, wikis, chats, and blogs that are all available via Moodle’s world-renowned content library. Educators can add or remove features to tailor Moodle to their exact academic needs!

3. BrightSpace

Easy, flexible, and smart, Brightspace takes into account the diversity of today’s learners. This platform allows educators to identify which students need help before they fall behind.

It creates personalized learning paths for each student’s that are neatly displayed on a Progress Dashboard. Educators can map, predict, even reroute individual student learning outcomes as well as create rubrics to evaluate quizzes, assignments, discussions, and more. Brightspace is loaded with an arsenal of tools that educators can use to fine tune their teaching styles. It is all about results. With their mobile app “Pulse” they allow educators to continue teaching in a mobile way while taking advantage of features like “Predictive Analysis” on the go. They can identify and help students who may be at risk of falling behind whenever they have time.

4. WizIQ

It is an Online learning platform for educators to teach and learn online with virtual classroom like environment, educational content and online student teacher interaction. Its award winning Virtual Classroom system enables online delivery of real-time instructor-led learning and has received acclaim from several education service providers.

This is a massive online teaching platform with over 2 million students worldwide and 13,000 courses.  It lets instructors design robust classes including video lectures, PowerPoint files, screencast videos, documents, audio files, text, and mashup videos. The platform is completely free for instructors to create their courses which they may offer for free or for a fee. If there is a fee involved, Udemy takes a percentage of that.  This is a very professional-looking platform that has a lot to offer.
