It exposes you to adventures and life lessons of the likes that can never be found within the confines of the four walls of a classroom, especially in a place you already know like the back of your hand.

Studying abroad isn’t just about gaining an academic degree. It is more about pushing your limits, forcing yourself to step out of your comfort zone and into uncharted territory to find wider horizons to spread your wings. It is more than just a learning experience, it is a life experience. The following are reasons why you should give the whole idea a thought –

  1. Get a chance to see the world: You will get a wonderful opportunity to see parts of the planet that you would not have had a chance to explore otherwise. You would get to soak in the culture of the place you’ll be in, learn about their ways, understand their history and even travel to other places nearby.
  2. The education itself: An exposure to a different education system will provide you with a chance to study and view the subjects of your choice from an entirely different perspective. It will also give you the chance to interact with a wider pool of experts and hence expand your own knowledge and understanding.
  3. Learn life skills: Many of you who are thinking about studying abroad will be living away from home for the first time. When you are on your own, you need to be totally self-sufficient. You will pick up on important life skills such as learning to cook, doing your own grocery shopping, taking care of your health, and paying utility bills on time, etc. While these may seem like mundane everyday tasks, they are the small things that make you grow up in ways you can never imagine.
  4. Learn a new language: When you have to move to a new country, it is very important that you learn the local language to adapt well. In case you opt to go to a non-English speaking nation, you will have to learn the local language and this will be a valuable addition to your skills for your entire life. To find out universities in which countries offer programs of your choice, do a good research over Internet.
  5. Career opportunities: The experience that you gain and the skills that you develop will make you an interesting prospective employee for several companies and you will marvelous career opportunities in your hometown as well as where you are studying.
  6. Living is different than visiting:You will not only be going to a whole new place, you will actually be settling down there for a considerable amount of time. You will be riding public transport, eating local food, befriending local people and having an awesome experience as a whole.
  7. Meeting people and making friends: You will be interacting with a whole host of new people with their diverse backgrounds and identities. You will be lifelong friends with some of them. You will live with them, study with them and hangout with them, forging lasting bonds in the process. So it is important to make efforts to step out of your comfort zone and make friends with people whose backgrounds and lives are nothing like your own.
  8. Personal development: The experiences you will have will test your nature, push you to the limits, but ultimately help you grow. The personal development that happens when you have to be self-sufficient is something you would never experience in familiar surroundings.
  9. Better chances at higher studies: An international experience and exposure widens your understanding and perception of your own subject which then stands you in good stead when you are applying for higher study programs. You also have better chances of securing.
  10. Unique life experience: For many of you, this will probably be the only chance at living and exploring a new country, unencumbered by the burdens of life. Eventually you will most likely find a job and have a career to think about, and won’t have the opportunity to travel for the longest time. The days spent studying abroad will then become an experience worth the effort and leave you with a treasure trove of memories.

In an unknown place, you get to know yourself better than ever before. You learn what you can and can’t do and what you need to learn to get better at this thing called life. So study abroad is not just about studying, it’s also about developing a strong self and establishing a firm foundation for your life.
