LearningWrite, an education technology company focused on language learning and assessment, has developed the first-ever AI-powered tool for boosting multilingual writing skills. The newly introduced tool “Chat Scenario” activities elevate writing engagement to a new level. Each scenario gives a learner a situation, setting and conversation partner, all played by a custom-engineered AI assistant powered by the most recent large language models. The student then initiates a real-time, text-based discussion to achieve specific discourse objectives.

Chat Scenarios empower students and teachers to capture the benefits of frequent, high-quality writing practice like never before, providing on-demand access to a language-proficient conversation partner while streamlining assignment creation and feedback. The new conversation feature builds on LearningWrite’s existing advanced automation tools for accelerating language writing practice. The platform’s auto-grading feature instantly scores students’ writing prompt responses using globally recognized ACTFL and STAMP Test standards through an algorithm trained on over 40k writing samples evaluated by experienced human raters.

LearningWrite’s multilingual AI application is a game changer for language proficiency development, addressing a long-standing demand for solutions that make writing practice more scalable and sustainable. The company’s online platform allows language teachers to select, assign, and assess writing activities (as well as have students complete and submit them).

Mike Biglan, Founder & CEO of LearningWrite, commented on the initiative:

Teachers know that writing and conversing in a target language drive language acquisition. But finding, distributing, and grading writing practice assignments has traditionally been time- and effort-intensive, making it hard for overextended teachers to keep up. We saw an opportunity to use AI to fill that need and worked with language educators to make it happen.

The Chat Scenario features have been soft-launched to chosen users for testing and feedback. LearningWrite aims to roll out a phased regional chat scenario by the 2024-25 US academic year.

LearningWrite helps students develop efficient writing habits regardless of their level of expertise. It ensures that students receive high-quality prompts and standardized grading. It engages with Canvas, Google Classroom, and ClassLink. As a result, transferring assignment scores requires less time. It is already being utilized to expedite language practice and assessment for ELL and global language students in grades 6-12 in several top 50 US school districts, assisting students in preparing for the Seal of Biliteracy Exam, the STAMP Test, and the AP Language, Literature, and Culture examinations. The AI chat rollout coincides with a significant rise in the platform’s user base.
