Tata Consultancy Services, a global leader in IT services, consulting, and business solutions, has established an advanced research centre in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) to conduct high-quality research in digital health, robotics, and intelligent systems using edge computing, embedded systems, and AI.

The TCS Research Centre, located in the institute’s research park in New Town, Kolkata, will feature three cutting-edge laboratories where over 150 TCS scientists will explore cutting-edge technologies and push the boundaries of innovation.

Dr Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer of TCS, commented on the development:

TCS is transforming the way industry has traditionally engaged with elite research and learning institutes. One of our focus areas is to co-locate our research and innovation labs in academic institutions to enable a more efficient exchange of knowledge and talent. We initiated this journey by moving into the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai a few years back. Establishing our research and innovation lab at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park is the next step of this strategic journey. At IIT KGP, we fund several research programs; co-innovating with them will improve outcomes for both parties.

The laboratories will be in Sensing and Communications, Edge Computing and Analytics, and Robotics and Visual Computing. Researchers will have access to state-of-the-art equipment at the centre, enabling them to accelerate innovations in cutting-edge technologies such as edge computing, embedded systems and Artificial Intelligence. This new centre is a testament to TCS’s rich history of collaboration with academia to create a business and societal impact.

Professor Virendra Kumar Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur, stated:

The Advanced Research Center will strengthen our strategic collaboration with TCS, underscored by their presence in the newly established IIT KGP Research Park, Kolkata. This partnership represents a significant leap forward in harnessing cutting-edge technologies to address the most pressing challenges in healthcare and automation. Combining IIT Kharagpur’s world-class research capabilities with TCS’s industry-leading expertise, we aim to drive transformative innovations that enhance quality of life, improve healthcare delivery, and contribute to the growing field of intelligent systems. This center will foster groundbreaking research and create opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations, empowering the next generation of technologists and researchers to shape the future.

The centre will anchor TCS-funded research programmes launched in partnership with academic partners, including IIT KGP. The TCS Research Centre at IIT KGP will also boast a customer experience centre where TCS clients across industries such as mining, agriculture, mobility, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail can gain exclusive experience of original research concepts by TCS. Workshops held at the customer experience centre will be open to external participation. TCS scientists, industry subject matter experts, and the IIT KGP faculty will collaborate to solve industry problems. Building on the strong relationship shared by TCS and IIT KGP, this centre will serve as a pioneer for setting up similar labs.
