In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated a capacity-building plan for the holistic development of 15 lakh teachers in higher educational institutions and to instil ethics and human values. On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the mission was revealed.

The mission is called the Malaviya Mission-Teacher Training Programme. It would name 111 institutes Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres (MMTTC) throughout India. These institutes will provide the teacher training. While some of the programmes are online, some are not.

According to ANI’s report, a UGC official said, “We aim to complete the training of all 15 lakh teachers in the next two to three years.”

The online programme has a duration of two weeks. The mission’s significant focuses include holistic education, Indian knowledge systems, academic leadership, governance, research, skill development, assessment, inclusion, technology integration, learning outcomes identification, and evaluation. In addition, the mission will foster the instructors’ multidisciplinary and critical thinking skills, according to the UGC official.

The UGC Chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar, says, “It prioritises the ongoing professional development of faculty, offering a forward-looking orientation across various themes.” The course not only emphasises faculty development but also the faculty’s participation in institutional development, a critical component of raising the standard of higher education.

According to officials, the training material strikes a mix between an India-centric ethos and a global viewpoint, providing professors with Indian values and cutting-edge technology to handle the changing higher education scenario. Faculty members have enrolled for the capacity-building activities on a special faculty site.

Another UGC official said, “The Malaviya Mission would be able to adopt innovative approaches to curriculum transactions, teaching-learning, pedagogical methodologies, and assessment procedures indicated in the NEP 2020 and most suitably pushed forward via MMTT centres.“
