Student engagement is always prioritized when we speak of education, especially online education. It is one of the essential elements for effective learning. Student engagement is defined by their willingness to participate and succeed in their learning process. It is a sophisticated concept with both cognitive and emotive components. The degree to which students actively participate in the learning process, such as paying attention, exercising critical thoughts, and asking questions, is called cognitive engagement. Students’ emotional investment in their education, such as feelings of interest, motivation, and value, is called emotive engagement.

Student engagement is crucial for academic success. Students who are actively involved in school are more likely to succeed academically and behaviorally. They are more likely to complete high school and enroll in college. Student engagement may also aid in developing critical social-emotional abilities. These abilities include communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. These soft skills are essential to lead in the 21st century. Also, studies suggest that increasing student involvement may lower dropout rates. Engaged kids are less likely to quit school as they experience a sense of belonging to their school and the community.

Living in times where online learning and hybrid models are the new norms, there’s a dire need to ensure that students engage in their learning. Educators can drive classroom engagement. However, in online mediums, learning content plays an influential role in engaging students.

Among all the multimedia options, educational videos can be of great help as the resources are apt to meet the diverse needs of students. Video specifically helps students who better learn from visuals. For instance, YouTube is the most accessed platform for smart device owners. It is the go-to platform for people to learn new things, get familiar with new topics, entertain themselves, or gain knowledge on anything. Anyone who wants to upskill or learn something new can go to YouTube to find videos to help them understand a concept. But, for formal learning, YouTube can be a distraction as the content is not standardized, structured, or categorized. Also, ads are another major distraction that can hamper the learning experience- this is where educational video-sourcing platforms like Boclips come into play.

Videos help learners understand topics better by combining multimedia, including texts, audio, animation, and visuals. Videos can also cater to different learning preferences. For instance, you’ll find multiple videos on a topic, for example, coding. There may be an animated clip showcasing what coding is, a video with text description and voice-over, an illustrative video with everything being demonstrated comprehensively, or something else that’d match the learner’s preference.

However, finding the right educational video can be challenging when we live in a world with a vast amount of information available at our fingertips. Important factors such as like video quality, learning preferences, information accuracy, and an overwhelming amount of material creates hurdles in picking out the most enlightening and interesting videos. Finding reliable, current, and relevant educational videos can be a big challenge and requires sorting through the clutter. A few common reasons why educators and learners struggle to find suitable educational videos include:

  • Overwhelming content availability: Educational content is available in vast amounts on the internet. With free video platforms like YouTube, it is easy for people to create and upload videos resulting in a huge amount of options. With the volume of resources available, it might be challenging to decide which video is the most informative, instructive, and interesting, especially when so many of them address the same themes.
  • Quality and Accuracy: Individuals and organizations with varied degrees of subject matter competence are responsible for producing a wide range of educational videos that are accessible to the world. It is difficult to determine which resources can be trusted since some include errors or are irrelevant, while others might not have a high enough production quality.
  • Diverse learning needs of students that are constantly evolving: Learners come from various backgrounds and have varying interests and degrees of expertise. It may be difficult and time-consuming to track out information that addresses the diverse learning needs of constantly evolving students.
  • Copyright and Licensing Issues: When it comes to distributing educational information and multimedia, especially video content, there are many legal factors to consider. Ensuring that the material is licensed correctly and complies with all applicable copyright rules can often be be challenging.

A platform that offers licenses and ready-to-use high-quality educational videos has the potential to address these challenges.
