Here are the key insights of the report

Student Enrollment in Online Skills Programmes

The report highlights a 67% increase in students enrolled in online skill training programmes over the last six years, indicating a substantial move toward practical, outcome-based learning. This method of skill development, which focuses on accomplishing precise and quantifiable goals, has proven dynamic and relevant to meeting the demands of today’s fast-paced, technology-driven industries.

Most in-Demand Skills

The research outlines the most sought-after skills, with web development leading the way at 13%, followed by digital marketing and aptitude training at 8% each and advanced Excel at 7%. Other popular courses included Python programming, machine learning, data science, financial modelling, and business analytics, all consistent with industry trends emphasizing digital infrastructure, data-driven decision-making, and the growing relevance of digital marketing strategies.

A Rising Focus on Preparing Individuals for the Job Market

The survey reveals a notable trend of increased emphasis on enhancing employability, with 20% of students pursuing placement training to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industrial requirements. Furthermore, 47% of students listed internships and employment prospects as their top reasons for enrolling in skill courses, while 34% wanted to learn new skills for professional development. Another 12% sought credentials to demonstrate their skills, while 5% sought training to develop personal projects. These findings demonstrate e-learning’s varied utility in addressing many student objectives.

The Global Reach of Online Education

The geographical presence of e-learning platforms also demonstrates its inclusion. In 2024, 62% of learners came from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, with Tier 3 accounting for 40% and Tier 2 for 22%. These findings highlight the importance of e-learning in democratizing access to quality education and reducing geographical inequities. Furthermore, metropolitan cities such as Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Pune substantially contributed to the e-learning ecosystem, demonstrating its universal appeal in urban and semi-urban settings.

Equal Opportunities for Women

Gender equity also saw promising progress, with women accounting for 45% of all learners in 2024. This relatively balanced participation reflects the flexibility and accessibility of online learning, enabling more women to pursue professional development. Measures to increase participation in STEM and technology-related sectors are likely to help bridge the gender gap in the coming years.

According to the report, 2.7% of learners also progressed to specialized training in advanced skills, signalling a maturing e-learning ecosystem where students seek foundational knowledge and niche expertise to stay competitive. Learners spent an average of 36 minutes daily on skill training, demonstrating the seamless integration of e-learning into their routines. The completion rate for training programmes stood at 41%, indicating a strong commitment among learners and providing scope for platforms to enhance engagement through interactive content and personalized support systems.

The report’s findings suggest a promising future for e-learning in India. As the demand for skill development continues to rise, platforms such as Internshala Trainings are set to lead the revolution. By emphasizing diversity, emerging technologies, career readiness, and learner engagement, e-learning is poised to change the future of education and skill development in India and beyond.

Sarvesh Agrawal, Founder and CEO of Internshala, emphasized the critical role of outcome-based skilling in building a job-ready workforce. He stated:

E-learning has emerged as a game-changer for India’s youth, enabling them to improve and stay competitive in today’s rapidly evolving job market. Moreover, the rapid growth of technology is changing industries, making companies focus more on skills than traditional degrees. To keep up, many students are choosing skill development courses because they are affordable, easy to access, and teach the latest skills. The increasing number of students taking these courses shows they understand what the job market needs and are working to improve their chances of getting hired.
