Sustainable AI and Making Tech Work For Students

Every school year, a worrying number of students slip from “slightly behind” to “at risk,” often without a timely lifeline. By the time those red flags show up in end-of-term grades, the fixes required are not just more expensive, but also less effective and a real disruption to the learning process. But here is the silver lining: recent advances in explainable, privacy-conscious AI present a golden opportunity to catch these issues earlier, using the routine data schools already gather. Research shows that these systems can accurately spot risks while keeping their reasoning transparent, empowering educators to step in decisively.

Enter explainable AI (XAI)[1], a potential game-changer for schools and teachers striving to support their most vulnerable students. In layman’s terms, XAI is all about clarity. It explains what has been done, what is happening now, and what is coming next, along with the information that drives those decisions. This level of transparency allows teachers to confirm existing knowledge, challenge assumptions, and develop new insights to spot learning challenges early. Think of it as a reliable GPS for educational support, steering teachers toward timely interventions before problems spiral out of control.

A 2024 study backs this up, revealing that these systems can predict course outcomes and identify at-risk students with a remarkable accuracy of around 93%[1]. This level of transparency means educators can actually see the reasoning behind alerts—treating outputs as actionable insights rather than mind-boggling black-box judgments. In short, XAI helps schools pinpoint which students are cruising along and which ones need a bit more attention, along with the reasons why.

The data fuelling these insights comes from straightforward measures of student interaction, like clicks on materials, frequency of access, and other simple traces in virtual learning environments. These patterns have emerged as solid predictors of student success, echoing what educators have long known: participation is a leading indicator of learning outcomes. Because these signals are generated continuously rather than at fixed testing intervals, they enable timely responses. The mix of ongoing engagement data and easy-to-understand models transforms everyday interactions into early warnings that teachers can act on right away.

But it’s not just about model performance; the way these systems are operationalized is crucial. Platforms such as RADAR integrate academic records, current progress, attendance, and selected soft-skill indicators to keep a constant eye on students. They send alerts to advisors and instructors when a learner’s path diverges from expectations[2]. Thanks to XAI, these platforms reveal the specific factors behind each alert, allowing schools to align their responses with real needs—be it study skills referrals, workload adjustments, or targeted tutoring. The real magic happens in the workflow that connects these signals to quick, effective actions.

The broader picture reinforces the need to scale these systems. Reviews of AI in education highlight that early identification driven by data not only cuts down on academic harm but also reduces socio-economic costs. This proactive approach allows for tailored interventions instead of one-size-fits-all solutions that come too late[3]. The potential of natural language processing to identify reading and language challenges and computer vision to spot errors in problem-solving is game-changing.

Of course, critics raise valid concerns about early-warning systems potentially stigmatising students, automating bias, or nudging schools toward surveillance without clear benefits. But these worries can be handled with thoughtful design. First, systems should explain their decision to flag a student in plain language and keep a human in the loop. If teachers can understand why a student was flagged, they can scrutinise and validate the signal before any action is taken. Second, known failure modes need tight management with strict thresholds and ongoing evaluation. A notable example is the mix-up between “withdrawn” and “pass” in one study, underscoring the need for cautious deployment and teacher validation rather than blind faith in automated recommendations. Lastly, equity and privacy safeguards should be built in from the start: minimise data collection, secure it, test for bias, and give families a way to challenge decisions. When combined with timely support services, continuous monitoring can truly revolutionize teaching and create a more inclusive, adaptable learning environment.[4]

For everyone else, the stakes couldn’t be clearer: late identification of educational struggles is both costly and unfair. When problems are only acknowledged after high-stakes exams, students face unnecessary stress, families lose faith in schools, and institutions end up spending more for less effective solutions. Early identification through XAI, paired with timely support, keeps student motivation high and boosts learning outcomes—benefits that matter not just for classrooms but also for society’s future workforce.

The research is apparent, showing that well-designed models can accurately forecast academic risks. XAI can clarify these forecasts for educators, and routine engagement data can provide signals without invading student privacy. The way forward isn’t about waiting for the perfect tech; it’s about rolling out the systems we know can help right now, complete with clear safeguards and ongoing evaluation. By prioritizing sustainable AI practices in education, we can ensure that technology truly serves humanity, creating a fairer and more effective learning environment for all students.
